As we begin this evenings session, let me state the reason I conduct these monthly chats: to provide you the opportunity to ask questions and pick the brain of a successful, long-time, real-money trader. Its not the highest and best use of our limited time here together for me to define basic terms and explain introductory principles taught in your Course materials. Thats what my Course Counselors are here for... Now is the time for you to use me to help you apply the basics youre learning and to prepare you for what to expect once youre out in the market itself (either paper trading or with real money). And if we have some fun along those lines, so much better. Alright... Let's count the C's:

Ive got a Davidoff Double R cigar fired up, heres our platter of Krista's freshly baked chocolate chip cookies, the coffees poured, here's my set of U.S. Charts, the computer's humming, so lets talk commodities! NOTE!!! When commenting on one of my Courses, please identify WHICH ONE. Also, when relating trading experiences and/or results, please give details: Futures contracts, options, options AND futures, etc. This helps others follow along and learn from your experience too.

Paul (Midland, Ontario, Canada) asks:
Merry Christmas Ken!!

at 6:16:35 PM
Thanks Paul! Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you too!
Joel asks:
Ken, I'm curious as to how you start your trading day. Do you look at TOVI then your charts for opportunities, or do you look at your charts and then at TOVI? Could you provide me with your procedures? I'm having trouble figuring out the best way to get myself organized.

at 6:21:27 PM
Hi Joel --- I mark my charts (just as you'll see on the brand new 50% Retracement Video that's coming VERY soon now), and make my trading plans for each chart I wish to trade on post-it notes. I do all this typically in the evening when it's quiet. Then I call my broker, just as I do every morning, place any new orders, and get my daily price and trade updates. Now, you'll have to come to one of my Trading Camps with Traders Jim and Louie to find out WHERE I make my morning broker call from . . . .

Eve asks:
Hello, Ken. Wishing you and yours a wonderful holiday season. Just wondering. On the Alert Line, several trades are listed under both the 123 top/bottom strategy and the HiLo breakout strategy. For a smaller account, is either more beneficial? Thanks, Eve

at 6:26:39 PM
Thanks Eve! Paper trade ALL the markets you can, for the practice and education that provides. Then, when you're in the market with real money, you'll KNOW which trade (if any) you'd like to venture forth in with hard cash. Thanks!
clint asks:
how ya'll are? new member, just watching for now from the bayou's of louisiana! (type slow, i don't read too, fast! (lol) clint

at 6:28:32 PM
Hello to you too Clint! Boy, some Louisiana cajun food sure sounds good right about now . . . . Lucky you! Have you run into my friends Pierre and Beaudreaux. If you do, tell 'em Hi!
O.J. Climber asks:
Ken:How long did it take for your success to start to happen in a big way after your first $700 investment in commodities?

at 6:30:31 PM
Oh yes, O.J. Climber, back in those early days when we were trading dinosaurs, I began to see results from my trades in a matter of a few weeks. Oh yes, I remember when . . . .
bighouse asks:
How accurate is TOVI Trend Tracker? The corn made a 1,2,3 bottom (I think). If I am wrong, please tell me. Thank you, Richmond, VA

at 6:34:53 PM
On Friday, bighouse, Corn made a new #1 bottom point, so you'll want to keep watching this market for its 1-2-3 bottom formation. Then, use TOVI to CONFIRM when Corn prices break above the #2 point. Thanks!
Nathan asks:
Hi Ken, Reviewing the options strategies there seem to be good rules to begin a trade, but I'm having difficulty in determining when to exit. Any suggestions?

at 6:38:57 PM
Remember, Nathan: Trading is an ART, not a science. Two excellent traders will have differing trading strategies. I recently read an interview with Jim Rogers where he pointed out the VAST differences (almost opposing differences!) between he and his partner, George Soros. These two men, I believe, still hold the record for the best-performing commodity fund!!! So what I'm saying to you, Nathan, is to paper trade SEVERAL styles (of entry and exit strategies, as listed in each of our Trading Strategy pdf files) to see which suit YOU best! (And then let us know what you've settled upon!) Thanks!
greg in arizona asks:
Hi Ken and crew! On U.S. Charts, Options Quotes, what does the p next to an option premium mean? Thanks!

at 6:39:45 PM
It means "the previous session's price" !
Joel asks:
Ken, do you still trade with futures contracts or just options?

at 6:40:37 PM
Both Joel (although I seem to trade more futures than options --- but still a LOT of both)! But don't go by me --- see which works best for YOU!
tiney asks:
Hi Ken, Kristi, Jim , Louie- Had a wonderful time at Trading Camp! Working harder than ever on my paper trades, but still scared to "jump in"! Maybe I'll start with Oats because they are reasomable! (price that is) I need to designate workout time to burn off some of the residue from all that wonderful food fare you (and Donna) served up! Thanks for the hospitality, ton of information, and the encouragement to get to work! Happy Holidays!

at 6:44:31 PM
Hello again tiney! You're welcome, and it was a pleasure hosting you at our Trading Camps. Come on by again when you can --- the coffee and hot chocolate's always on here in the Trading Lounge! (How'd you like your picture I just posted?)

See what I mean when I say "trading's mostly psychological"??!! This is what Sir John Templeton harps on too. (PLUG: Be sure to enroll in my powerful Ultimate Technique for Success Course for a HUGE boost to making your dreams come true . . . .)
Why Your Dreams aren't coming true...
ozzie/kathy asks:
Dear Ken, I joined your WGB Course in August'05 and have just started to make some really good money on my options. I recently ordered your advanced commodity course and look forward to making even more money. p.s. you're right about the option market, they don't always reflect what the futures charts are doing and can sometimes go the other way in terms of price. Thanks for the Worlds Greatest Business, IT REALLY IS! Merry Christmas Ken. All The Best, Kathy/Ozzie from Australia

at 6:46:37 PM
G'day down under, Merry Christmas, and Happy New Year Ozzie/Kathy! Thanks!
nvest4me asks:
Do options with lower premiums tend to have greater potential for total profit?

at 6:48:20 PM
I've never seen any statistics on this, nbest4me. I think it would be a question for an M.I.T. mathematical genius!
Dave C, Natick, MA asks:
Wow! Anyone else making money in the metals and sugar? Copper just won't quit! Thanks, Ken for the heads up in your "It just Happened" emails.

at 6:49:30 PM
You're welcome, Dave! Glad you're reading them! (Hey everyone: How 'bout it?!)
Paul (Midland, Ontario, Canada) asks:
I've been thinking about attending one of your trading camps in 2006. I'm on the east side of Canada and can not figure out the easiest way to get to you side of the USA. All the airports seem so far from your town. Would I have to fly to a major city then rent a car to drive down you your company site?

at 6:51:43 PM
Hello Paul! The major airport just 24 miles from Grants Pass is Medford, Oregon. Then try looking at landing in Portland, Oregon and renting a car for the 4- to 5-hour drive down to Grants Pass. Looking forward to seeing you here in Southern Oregon, Paul!
Colin asks:
HI Ken, A couple of chats ago I asked you about buying " deep out of the money", and you told me to paper trade and try it out. Well, so far I've noticed that in markets that are moving moderately (wheat) the out of the money prices don't move up all that quickly. It seems that it is better to trade the options as if they are futures. Perhaps I should try it with Gold or some other hysterical commodity. Or try trolling one in a channel. Oh yes and my paper trading is at the stage of me Jumping up and pointing at the the computer and shouting " I knew it would do that! Why didn't I put in a trade?" ( my wife hopes this is just a phase I'm going through) Colin in Vancouver

at 6:54:49 PM
Thanks Colin! Appreciate the update (and I ALWAYS love it when someone follows my advice)!!! Yes, that's a GREAT phase you're going through. You know how I always answer the question "When should I begin trading with real money?": "When you find yourself saying 'I'm tired of being right and not making any money on it' a LOT!" Congratulations Colin!
PJW12 asks:
Ken, why do you not use a discount broker and make your own on-line options trades. I am new to options trading, however I use a low cost on-line service to trade stocks. It is very easy and very cost effective. Why would I not conduct the options trades myself as I do my stocks. I use Stop Loss and Limit Orders online.

at 6:56:57 PM
The answer, PJW12, is ALWAYS what works best for you. Personally, I prefer having a broker, and wouldn't trade without one!
THREESUNZ asks:
HELLO KEN! DID YOU EVER BUY AN OPTION THAT WAS SO PROFITABLE,THE PRICE WENT SO HIGH THAT YOU COULD NOT LIQUIDATE IT?

at 6:58:24 PM
No, Threesunz, never!
dreamer asks:
I got interested in futures a few yrs.ago and have a real strong interest in it but have never been able to fully understand the ends and outs. Your apprentice type program has sparked my attention A LOT! It really isn't rocket science as many people think. I am still a novice and I know that at one time you were also, so ... how long did you paper trade before diving in?

at 7:00:15 PM
Hello dreamer, and welcome aboard! Just a few weeks, and then I KNEW this was the World's Greatest Business! Please stay in touch with us! Keep at it, and you'll KNOW when the time is right for YOU!
WGM asks:
Merry Christmas,Ken. First I just want to say thank you for taking your time to chat with all of us. You could be doing many other things than this I'm sure. I've been paper trading since the last week in October and did really great in lumber, well almost really great. I made over 9,000% in 30 days, but just didn't have enough sense to get out of the market and lost almost all of it in the next 10 days. How do you develop the savvy about when to get out of the market. TOVI was saying it was an up market but the bottom dropped like a rock. Thanks WGM

at 7:04:23 PM
That was a nice ride up, WGM! And I'm glad you experienced it --- it was a great learning experience you'll never forget! When TOVI rates a market "Extreme", that means anything can happen --- up OR down! This is where it's important to have an EXIT strategy in place BEFORE you ever place your trade. We've discussed this somewhat this evening. Try out the suggested EXIT strategies you'll find in each of the Trading Strategy pdf files at the Member Center on www.kenroberts.com. Thanks WGM, and please stay in touch!
nanbill asks:
hi ken, new member do u have any trading camps scheduled for the east coast in 2006.

at 7:09:13 PM
None yet, nanbill, but stay tuned . . . .
hammermill33 asks:
hi Ken. just made my first real money with sugar.(and it was sweet) wondering how calm your emotions are now, compared to when you first started trading? mainly fear and greed. thanks.

at 7:15:33 PM
That IS a sweet Sugar chart, hammermill33! My UTS Course will surely help you in the "emotions" arena --- as John Templeton puts it, "The more you study spirituality (psychology), the better trader you will be! But trading a LOT over the years helps too. I'm not up and down emotionally with the markets as I used to be back in my prehistoric days! Thanks!
Len asks:
Merry Christmas to you and all your family and employees, Do you think it a good idea to use Tovi and make trades when they change from moderate to strong? I was going to do it just to start to get a feel for things. Whats your thought

at 7:16:43 PM
Thank you Len! Yes, the "Moderate to Strong" TOVI Strategy is one of the most popular. Let us know how it works out for YOU too!
franman asks:
Hi Ken and Crew. I was with you about ten or more years ago and had to quit because I kept getting stopped out all the time. I hope that with Options now this problem will be solved. It feels like coming home to friends.

at 7:18:13 PM
I know you'll love the power of options now, franman. (You know, options didn't exist when I began trading . . . !) Options truly are "the great equalizer" and allow us to wait out HUGE dips and drops in price and ultimately catch the Big Move! Thanks!
Dave C, Natick, MA asks:
Ken, I've been paper trading since 1998, and just started trading with real money this May. So far, I am breaking even after expenses. I have fallen into almost every trading error (esp. holding on to losers too long), but so far I "live" to trade another day. I am encouraged by my progress, but recognize that I'm still a novice. Trading psychology is integral and interesting in this business. Thanks for keeping us focused on the psychology, internal & external!

at 7:19:03 PM
Thanks Dave! You're welcome!
David asks:
Hi Ken ( David from Atlanta,GA. What's the secret to finding a broker thats willing to work with you when you just want to start out with a small amount of money. So far, even in preliminary conversation, they want to edge me up. So I've backed away. What do I do?

at 7:20:08 PM
Keep calling, David! It's worth the exercise, it's worth the effort, and it's worth you time too! Remember: It's YOUR money, and no one cares for it as YOU do! Stay in touch . . . .
kerry asks:
Kerry (Chicago, IL) That must be darn good coffee and cookies! Let's talk Gold!

at 7:21:42 PM
Gold isn't a "C" word, kerry! (But are you in it?)
trwtrader asks:
Ken, 2 questions. When do expect the release of your 50% Retracement DVD and release of the Ultimate Technique for Success Course on DVD? Thanks.

at 7:25:38 PM
Certainly by the first of the New Year for the 50% Retracement video, trwtrader. As for the UTS videos, I'm conducting a very special, very "private" UTS seminar here in my Ken Roberts Meeting Hall Classroom that will be "totally televised" and turned into a brand new set of DVDs for the UTS Course. If you'd like to be one of these "Special 10", call a Course Counselor tomorrow and let him or her know! Thanks!
Sneak Preview 50 Percent Retracement

Ultimate Technique for Success
Rags asks:
I'm curious about your response to Joel's question. Do you look at TOVI Trend Tracker to back up your entry signal? Like in DEC Swiss Franc right now I see a 123 bottom, but TT says neutral.

at 7:32:15 PM
Yes, Rags, the Swiss Franc is working on a 1-2-3 bottom formation right now, and prices broke above the #2 point. TOVI hasn't been updated as yet this evening, but watch starting tomorrow for TOVI's Trend Tracker to signal "Up" in the Swiss Franc. If it doesn't report "Up" tomorrow, I'd wait until it does confirm the Swiss Franc's uptrend.

You know, for so many years Course Members asked if I could make a "template" to place over the price charts to confirm/identify the formations we watch for. Now, TOVI's done that!!!!!!
Nick - Kirkland, WA asks:
Ken - have you ever used Dr. Hawkins's calibration techniques in regards to your trading? (e.g. "This trade is a good trade? T/F?) Results?

at 7:34:51 PM
More and more Course Members are using Dr. Hawkins' "Calibration Technique" in their trading, Nick, and reporting great results! Realize also, Nick, that Dr. Hawkins' technique does NOT predict the future . . . .
Brighten the Quality of Your Life
Steve asks:
Hi Ken--greetings from beautiful Colorado! Do you primarily make trades based on the S1,1-2-3 and hi-lo strategies, or are these just part of the arsenal of strategies you use? Steve

at 7:37:55 PM
Thanks Steve! These are basically it for me! Plus, I always like "Extreme" markets (like 2-cent sugar and the Euroyen now)!
Gaetan Dube asks:
Hi Ken| Tis'G. Dube from Maine - Wishing you,Jim and Louie a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. My wish for Christmas is to be able to Attend a Week End at Your Trading Camp. I believe that my proplem here to get started is fear of starting does that make sense? And I believe being at a weekend working and learning with you Guys would be a Vote of confidence for trading. And that is all because I've got burned once by a Broker that I trusted. Thank you

at 7:40:17 PM
Yes, fear of getting started makes perfect "sense" Gaetan Dube! (See: It's mostly psychological . . . .) Did you read my novel, A Rich Man's Secret, Dube? "Take the first step, no more no less, and the next will be revealed . . . ." Hope to see you here in Grants Pass soon! Stay in touch!
Secrets of the Stars
ray asks:
Ray Portage,Indiana I'm making a fortune in gold and sugar. It is only on paper, though. But it is giving me a ton of confidence.

at 7:41:44 PM
Great goin', Ray! Keep at it! Thanks for the update!
George asks:
Hello Ken, Jim, Louie and the rest of the clan, after 5 weeks of my first Trading Camp I have a new account set up and I have been paper trading with and without the "filter" that TOVI provides. Needles to say, I will not trade without checking with TOVI when using real money. I feel like I'm standing at the edge of the pool ready to jump in again. Thank you for all your help and best wishes!

at 7:43:45 PM
Thank YOU, George! Congratulations! (I'll post photos from the Trading Camp you attended in November!) Merry Christmas, George!
Trading Camp

Hey George! I'm seeing you all over these pictures!
ozzie/kathy asks:
Kathy/Ozzie, Yep making a stack of money in sugar,Gold, Copper, & O.J. is coming along nicely too. Thanks!

at 7:47:35 PM
Okay, ozzie/kathy, when you take some of those profits, come on up and see us here in Grants Pass! We'll put some salmon on the barbie for you!
asks:
Good evening. Ken, When you are figuring the 50% on the weekly chart. How far back do you look for the number high or low. I am looking at weekly coffee. thanks Terry

at 7:50:21 PM
First of all, use the two chart points that give you the greatest 50% retracement move. On the Weekly Coffee chart now, those would be the high of 137 and the recent low of 87. Not too motivating . . . . But then look at Coffee's MONTHLY chart: 318 high and 40 low = 50% retracement to 180!!! (You'll love the new DVD too!)
moneylover asks:
hey ken i was wondering if you still travel around and give camps on options or is it just in grants pass right now im in southern cal thanks

at 7:51:40 PM
Hey, moneylover, we're neighbors! Come on up! ('Cause I'm not going to the People's Republic of California anymore . . . .) Call a Course Counselor and get yourself signed up! See you here in the Trading Lounge, moneylover! (Are you a coffeelover and cigarlover too???)
Ernst asks:
Happy Holidays Ken. I'm a TWMPMM1 course member. I just sold my Gold "Call"option which i brought last monday for $1300 and liquidatedfor $2700 this morning($1400 profit).Do think Gold will go any higher?

at 7:53:04 PM
Congratulations Ernst! You can't lose money taking profits! "Is gold going any higher?" Wait, Ernst, let me get that crystal ball I had lying around here somewhere . . . .
Jay Ripley asks:
Dave C and Ken...yes, I did great with copper as well...got stopped out when it pulled back a coule of days ago...

at 7:53:40 PM
Thanks Jay! (Did you find your picture in those November Trading Camp photos too?)
Jay Ripley asks:
I attended the trading camp in November...definitely find a way to go...it's great! Medford is very close...and Ken, Jim, and Louie are great...

at 7:53:50 PM

lawnman1171 asks:
KEN, IS THERE GOING TO BE A VIDEOTAPED TRADING CAMP SOON?

at 7:54:33 PM
Yes, lawnman1171, the January 21-22 Trading Camp will be FULLY "televised"!
Esther asks:
Esther, Thank you for notifying us about gold a few weeks ago (with your It Just Happened email). When I phoned my broker & told him I wanted to buy an option for 1200.00, he responded to me "are you crazy, you want to spend that much money for an opton?" I said yes. I am still a novice; but I made $1,300.00 profit on the trade. However, I'm still not sure how to assess when to put in a sell order. Had I kept the gold option for another week, I would have mae $2,600.00. I'm not complaining. Ken, thanks for the tip. Here's my question. When you are considering buying an option because of the S-1 strategy, is it crucial to purchase that option on the first day, or is it okay to watch the direction that that commodity is going?

at 8:00:17 PM
Congratulations, Esther! (Say, how much money did your broker make on that Gold move --- did you ask him?) Be sure you're clear on YOUR exit strategy BEFORE you enter the trade --- and then stick to that plan! That's the best advice I can offer because I know it's true! No, it's not crucial to purchase the option on the first day out. Thanks again, Esther!
ray asks:
Ray, Portage Indiana, I ordered the book " The Trading Rule that can Make you Rich". It is a great book and I recommend it. It has really given me a new perspective in watching my charts. I can't wait for your 50 % retracement video.

at 8:01:42 PM
It is great, isn't it Ray?! I feature it in the new video too! (The author credits me with him finding the woman of his dreams --- his new wife --- because she was a Course Member who found his investment bookstore in North Carolina when they met and fell in love!)
Another Star Discovered
lawnman1171 asks:
KEN,I NOTICED A HORSE IN YOUR PARKING SPACE DID YOU TRADE IN YOUR HUMMER.

at 8:04:12 PM
Oh no, lawnman1171 --- I alternate! (The horse gets a LOT better gas mileage too!) Did you enter our Chat Photo Caption Contest under "CHAT" at www.kenroberts.com?
Dave C, Natick, MA asks:
Ken I have a couple of friends interested in trading commodities. I started with you in 1998, how would one begin today?

at 8:04:36 PM
Thanks Dave! Here: I'll show you . . . .
Do A Friend A Favor
gwg asks:
Ken: Do you always make money on every trade? GWG - Canada

at 8:05:47 PM
NO, gwg! You might lose 80% of your trades, but it's that 20% that can put you way over the top . . . . Paper trade as much as you can and you'll know what I mean. Thanks!
Watch Ken Trade
Dave C, Natick, MA asks:
Merry Christmas and Peace be with you! Yes, I am enrolled in the UTS course, and it has been great! I also have received my XMas order from Four Star Books, and bought extra copies of Dr. Hawkin's "Truth vs Falsehood," in order to pass on the wisdom. Tanks!

Thanks again Dave!

gary asks:
Santee,CA Ken: i just finished Ted Warren's book " How to make the stock market make money for you". I was a course member 9 years ago, bought the book, never read it till now. Big mistake! All the time lost! It really opens your eyes. I made some profitable trades back then, mainly O.J., but didn't really understand why. Now when I trade, there will be a reason, not a hope and a prayer. Thanks By the way, was Ted Warren the Warren Buffet of his time?

at 8:11:16 PM
A Shining Star

Yes he was, Gary --- that's a great way to put it! Thanks!
cowboy disney asks:
Ken, does tovi act like a crystal ball?

at 8:11:53 PM
As close as we mortals have to one, cowboy disney!
Bonita Joe asks:
Hey Ken!!!HI from Bonita Joe. Just saw David ask a question about a broker. My broker is down with the flu, so I have been dealing directly with the company's trade desk. I had to be SURE that I used the best terminology (not the kind my mother taught) but I "liquidated, terminated" some CALLS and I heard the word "sell" on the other end as he talked to the floor and the next day I was short the commodity rather than out. I asked them to play their recording and they corrected their ways. Ah yes, those words we say and they are heard wrong.....reminds me of dating in college!!! How was Mickey? I bet Goofy is the expert at trading!!! Good to "talk" with you. Bonita Joe

at 8:13:54 PM
Hey Bonita Joe! Yes, Mickey, Goofy, Scrooge McDuck, and all were great to see again! (I'll be sending some of our Disneyland trip pictures to UTS Members soon . . . . Watch your inbox!) Thanks! Great points about having a good broker . . . .
JimJ asks:
Hi Ken, I'm logging in late here. I'm curious how you determine the current active trading month. Is it by comparing volume and Open Interest? Thank you

at 8:14:34 PM
The "Active" Futures Month is that contract month with the highest Open Interest (which is many times the actual Front Month, but not always . . . .).
fix and fly paul asks:
Ken and crew. Fix and Fly Paul here. Haven't been able to chat for quite awhile. The recent reference to Dr. Hawkin's "calibration technique", where would I find info about him and his strategies?

at 8:16:08 PM
Yes, fix and fly paul. See www.FourStarBooks.com under "Dr. Hawkins" for his latest book and CD set: Truth vs Falsehood --- they are TERRIFIC! Krista and I listen to these every night as we go to sleep!
Bonita Joe asks:
Ken, this UTS "movie" looks like fun!! I think I will throw my 10 gallon hat in the ring!! Thanks! Bonita Joe

at 8:17:36 PM
It IS, Bonita Joe! Say, have you checked out MY cowboy hat . . . ?

greg in arizona asks:
Ken and Crew - Thanks for everything, and have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

at 8:17:56 PM
You too, Greg! Thanks from all of us!
George asks:
Ken, thank you for the pictures, the bull on your desk reminded me of another of your great projects! I am happy for Jay and the others making real money, I can't wait to be able to report to you the good results of your teachings. Thank you again for the opportunity.

at 8:18:31 PM
You're welcome, and thank YOU George!
pistolpete asks:
Hi Ken: I'm so excited that I had to share this with you. I just exited my first trade today and made about $2,000. Let me share it with you and the others. Based on the Hi Low breakout strategy I purchased two May 2006 Sugar calls with a 13 strike price for .56 points (627.20) each and just exited the position today at 1.53 points (1713.60) each. Unbelievable. This stuff really works. I'm still not too sure when to liquidate. I did it because I was excited and made money. Any advice here would be great. Thanks Ken. You da man.

at 8:20:37 PM
Thanks and congratulations, Pistolpete! (Have you watched John Wayne's last movie, The Shootist? Watch it! He has a great line regarding gun fighting that will answer your question . . . .) Let me know how you like it.
