Let's Talk Trading (tm) with Ken Roberts
from September 14, 2004
Return to archives page
As we begin this evening’s session, let me state the reason I conduct these
monthly chats: to provide you the opportunity to ask questions and pick the
brain of a successful, long-time, real-money trader. It’s not the highest and
best use of our limited time here together for me to define basic terms and
explain introductory principles taught in your Course materials. That’s what my
Course Counselors are here for... Now is the time for you to use me to help
you apply the basics you’re learning and to prepare you for what to expect
once you’re out in the market itself (either paper trading or with real money).
And if we have some fun along those lines, so much better. Alright...
I’ve got an Arturo Fuente Short Story (about 45 minutes packed into this little beauty) fired up, here’s our platter of freshly baked Goo Goo Supreme Brownies, the coffee’s (Cafe Altura House Blend, of course) poured, so let’s talk commodities!
NOTE!!! When commenting on one of my Courses, please identify WHICH ONE. Also, when relating trading experiences and/or results, please give details: Futures contracts, options, options AND futures, etc. This helps others follow along and learn from your experience too.
cathyandgeorge asks:
hi ken - we have two questions:
First question is about exit strategy - we use TOVI to buy the best option and most of our buys make some money (typically $300 - $800). Our big trouble is not knowing what to do when we're losing, specially when the long term turns red on a far out option with the sort of the time frame indicated by Tovi - do we wait for it to turn around again or do we get out straight away. So far our few losses have totalled more than our many small gains because Tovi often stays green into quite big losses before turning red.
Second question is also about exit strategy. Do you think there is as much potential profit in exiting with, say, a 20% gain on an option and use the money to buy another commodity - rather than holding the option on the chance of the option going better. Several times we have lost much of our gain by staying in too long - even though Tovi is still green - of course several times we would have made more money by staying in - we got out
at 6:25:38 PM
Hello cathyandgeorge. Your question(s) cut off, but I think I got the gist of it (them). First: You need to decide two things BEFORE implementing a trading plan: 1) Are you in this trade long- or short-term?, and 2) What are your exit strategies --- one for taking profits and one for cutting losses. For example, if I'm in a long-term trade (trading according to TOVI's light system), I'll enter the trade on the green light and stay the course even if the light turns red. This wouldn't be true if my trade were short-term --- that's a different strategy.
I believe considering these two elements will clear up the problems you've been facing.
Second question: Paper trade some of the suggested EXIT strategies in TOVI's four Trading Strategies and see which suit your trading style best.
Thanks!
Jace asks:
Good evening Ken,
Jerome from Chicago. I have a couple of questions on what you've taught in the pass: I don't see any reference in your new manual or the online charts to using "cash basis" as a gage for where futures prices might be heading. Is this something that you no longer recommend? Also, whatever happened to using the "Lawrence Welk Configuration" (i.e. 1, 2, 3 Tops and Bottoms)? Thanks!
at 6:32:48 PM
Hello Jace! I never had a "cash basis" strategy. What happened was that I made such a big deal about commodities being "supported" by an actual cash market that many Course Members made a trading strategy out of it. Obviously, then, a futures market will follow its cash market, but I never found those two moving lines alone to signal any profitable trading strategy.
One-two-three tops and bottoms ARE what usually signal any market's change in trend. However, the trick has always been to trade the ONE that pans out since MANY 1-2-3s typically occur before the final one! I use TOVI's Trend Tracker on U.S. Charts Online to help me determine that final 1-2-3. Hope this helps.

Be aware that investment in commodity futures for potential profit is accompanied by the risk of loss. Your decision to trade commodities should be based on your particular financial circumstances and trading objectives. |
boomerang asks:
Boomerang asks. Isn't it about time for feeders cattle to drop.
They seem to be at about an all time high
at 6:38:27 PM
Good eye, boomerang! Yes, Feeders have made that high, broken to the downside, begun rallying again, so this could be their turnaround. It's a long ways down from here . . . .
Drew asks:
Hi Ken,
Warmest Aloha from Kaneohe, Hawaii. Knowing that exiting an option trade - particularly for a profit - is more art than science, would you highlight a few technical indicators that you use to help 'trigger' profit taking? (I know, I know, paper trading is the only way to learn the 'art' side of the equation.)
at 6:41:24 PM
Thanks Drew --- and Aloha from Oregon (that doesn't sound right, does it?! Even though there is an Aloha, Oregon!)
My main "trigger" Drew in taking profits on options is when the futures market hits one of my 50% Retracement points (daily, weekly, and/or monthly). There, see? I didn't answer by saying "paper trade"!
schadzoo asks:
I want to purchace cheap out of the money options , how can I cut down on commish costs? Thanks
at 6:41:58 PM
Negotiate with your broker. That's the best way I know. Thank YOU!
MUKUND VASA asks:
with Ivan moving to Gulf, many rigs will be shut down (oil and Gas) what do you think? If extensive damage to equipment oil will go much higher than current $45.00 or so
at 6:43:23 PM
That's "stupid news" Mukund Vasa, and I've learned not to trade by it. Paper trade it, however, and I know you'll be truly surprised . . . . Thanks.
dsmith asks:
How do you suggest getting started paper trading?
at 6:45:28 PM
Start with a market in Ken's Chart Book. Transfer my markings to your charts and update that market every day. Watch those 50% Retracements get hit and you'll become a believer! Thanks.
moffitt asks:
Are you there? I am not receiving anything. Moffitt
at 6:46:13 PM
Here Moffitt, did you get this?
rodney asks:
Hi Ken. I used TOVI's Short Term Rankings to select a market, lets say Feeder Cattle, and its says trend is UP and to buy CALLS. I go to Budgeted options search and plug in 3 months for the time frame. Why does TOVI return options in March '05 for this search? What does the 3 month time frame really mean? And should the Long Term Rankings be "green" if buying options for the short term? Thanks.
at 6:48:53 PM
When you enter "3 months" in the Budgeted Options Search, you're telling TOVI that you want options with AT LEAST 3 months time remaining. So if TOVI returns an option way out to March '05 that fits your budget, hooray!!! The Long Term Rankings are for LONG TERM trading strategies, not Short Term. Hope this helps. Thanks.
MeMe asks:
I am still working with commodities and contracts. I am still hesitant to get into options. How much training does one need before taking the plunge?
at 6:50:37 PM
Keep working with futures contracts, MeMe, until you find yourself curious about options. (For most people, this happens within three months.) THAT's when options will begin to clear up and present their benefits to you. Good question.
Now, here's that Special Request I mentioned in the Chat Reminder emails I sent you:
I'm curious: What does Chat Night at YOUR home or office look like? Send us a picture, and it may be featured as one of our new monthly Chat Caption Contest Photos!
For best viewing, please set your digital camera to produce a photo of at least 3 x 5 inches and email this to me at: contest@kroberts.com.
Please include your name, address, phone number, and email address so we can contact you.
I can't wait!
Rob from ND asks:
Hi Ken. I sold my OJ call the other day for $1837 profit REAL MONEY! Bought it back in June when it was in a channel for $562. Wish I had bought 2! Do you base your trading decisions on the front month even if TOVI is tracking another? Thanks for everything!
at 6:59:13 PM
In the past, Rob, I used the front month exclusively. Now, I find myself drifting towards TOVI's "Active Futures Month" (which is still, essentially, the active front month). Congratulations!
Gypsy Woman asks:
Whoops! Paper traded Canadian$ and making $ on PAPER so bought a Dec.04 and March 05 call - 2nd thoughts about time decay approaching on the first and too late to cx order - sure enuf, turned to RED today, so I'll take my $200. hit and enjoy my Mar.05 OJ options-still have time, so I'll watch to see that mkt. settle a bit and am looking at the Coffee, trying to walk through the fear...decided I'm a Short-Term trader wanting the semi-instant gratification...loving Tovi, spending a fair amount of time practicing different strike prices, time, etc. and my Tovi Monitoring Portfolio - you make it so much easier for us KR, but we still hafta use our brains! Thanx for all you do - people trying to clutter my day, but I log on at night -the will to succeed and EARN a credible income from this burns strong!
at 7:02:53 PM
Good for you Gypsy Woman! Great attitude and great work/trading ethic. Don't fear Coffee: Get caffeinated!
Peter J. asks:
When you put an order in for an option trade and it is filled, how long do you keep your position if the market is currently moving against you but you have a few months left before the option expires?
at 7:11:56 PM
Hi PeterJ. You should always have your exit strategy planned BEFORE entering into a trade. Remember that the market will ALWAYS move against you even as you are riding its trend. Think about that . . . . Thanks for joining us this evening.
xxlhog1 asks:
Ive had all your materials since the late 80's and have never opened an account because of funds. I have finally saved 3500.00 to open an account and wanted to know if this would be enough. I always thought that i needed 5000.00.
at 7:14:12 PM
Assuming you've paper traded and are ready, xxlhog1, you'll find brokers who will open option trading accounts for as little as $2,000 or even less. From one "old timer" to another, howdy and welcome!
MarkO asks:
I agree with you that U.S. Charts are the best...period. We are supposed to base trades on the cash month, which trades through the the Last Trade Date (LTD) listed on U.S. Charts. My question is: Should any consideration be given to the First Date Notice (FND) date since this date also appears on U.S. Charts?
at 7:16:25 PM
FND (First Notice Day) is important because that's the date you have to be out of any LONG futures contracts to avoid taking delivery. Thanks MarkO. (By the way, Last Trading Day is when all SHORT futures contracts must be offset.)
khalester asks:
Hello, Ken. I'm from your old school of commodities.. 1-2-3 tops and bottoms, made a lot of money doing it. Tovi is new to me. Any suggestions on how to incorporate the old and new trading in the corn market? I am more than grateful for all you'v done for my family and i. thanks so much.
at 7:18:30 PM
Hello khalester, and thanks! Yes, now that Corn's bottoming, keep watching for your 1-2-3 bottom formation(s) and see how TOVI's short-term trend analysis helps confirm what you see. Thank YOU!
cathyandgeorge asks:
Thanks Ken - you got the gist just fine - and thank so much you for your answer - we'll stay the course! Cathy & George
at 7:19:10 PM
Thanks again C&G! Send us YOUR Chat Photo!
NICKDIGS asks:
KEN, WHAT IS THE DEFINITION OF A SHORT TERM TRADE VS A LONG TERM TRADE?
at 7:20:22 PM
I define short-term as 3 months or less and long-term greater than 3 months. (That was easy . . . .)
stephanie_in_tn asks:
Hi Ken,
I am just a beginner at all of this "stuff". I received the TWMPMM course in '98, have since been downsized from the Semiconductor business, and don't want to relocate for more of the same. I have always been fascinated by futures/options and I figured now is the time to do something that I love. My question (finally) is how to proceed. I have read through all of the materials, tapes, videos and felt like I was ready to begin paper trading. However, now I see that my course is obsolete and there are all these new things like TOVI, no more 1-2-3 tops/bottoms, hi-low breakout indicators. So, where should I start? I'm an engineer, so I have a need for a plan.
Thanks so much,
Stephanie
at 7:25:14 PM
I LOVE how engineers think, stephanie! (I wanted to be an engineer by the time I reached junior high school.) And you'll LOVE TOVI's Trading Strategies --- they're an engineer's dream-come-true! Paper trade them all and find out which is/are right for you.
Let me also say that you've not wasted time/energy with the "old" Course: A solid understanding of the commodity markets is still necessary (and you have that).
Also, remember to utilize my fantastic Course Counselors. Call and speak with one tomorrow.
Thanks!
aerodyne asks:
Hi Ken! We've been with you awhile and we are absolutely excited about
the WBG & TOVI! It's great to know that everything we have learned from you over the years has evolved and been refined down to the "Essence of Ken's Trading" It has always been difficult to sort out the right option. TT narrows field! Flying High Aerodyne!
at 7:26:54 PM
Thanks aerodyne! It's been quite a ride hasn't it?! Stay the Course, and stay in touch! (Bet you've got a great Chat Photo too!)

BILLM asks:
HI KEN: GREAT TEACHER, GREAT STAFF, I'D LIKE TO CONGRATULATE YOU ON WHAT YOU HAVE DONE FOR MANY OF US. BEEN WITH YOU FOR TWO YEARS, PAPER TRADED FOR OVER A YEAR BEFORE USING REAL M0NEY SO FAR HITTING FOUR FOR FOUR WITH MY LAST OJ TRADE BEING A TOVI TRADE ABOUT $1000.00 EACH TIME. DO YOU HAVE A PREFERANCE WHEN IT COMES TO THE THREE OPTION SEARCHES? THANKS AGAIN, KEN
at 7:33:23 PM
Thanks BillM! And congratulations --- good goin'!
Yes, I LOVE TOVI's Value Search. That's where I always begin my option searches. I note TOVI's top-ranked option, its price, and its Value Factor. Then I sort on Premium and compare the MOST EXPENSIVE option available and its Value Factor. And I'm always amazed at how much people are paying for absolute garbage (including zero Value Factors!). If only they had TOVI too . . . . How fortunate we are!
mrmarketwiz asks:
Hi Ken, John here from Springfield, OR. I'm still confused! Does the volume & open intrest column,in TOVI's options search, represent actual volume & open interest in the option, or in the futures contract?
at 7:34:48 PM
It's the Volume and Open Interest on that OPTION. (Something else I love doing is to sort on Open Interest and see which options are the most popular --- and notice that most of them are RED . . . .)
rktech asks:
hiya Ken and gang... I know you're really enthusiastic about TOVI, Ken, for options, but could you hi-lite how TOVI might help a futures trader ??
I'm interested to learn how TOVI might signal someone to get into a futures contract, at the market, and how TOVI would work with charted exit strategies... you know, trading 50% retracements over 6 - 8 weeks... maybe pyramiding as we go...
What do you think !??
at 7:38:35 PM
Sure, rktech, TOVI helps FUTURES traders too! For example, let TOVI confirm your chart formations. Let TOVI tell you when a market is in an up- or downtrend (sometimes even BEFORE it looks like one on your charts!). If my plan is to take profits at a 50% level, but TOVI still calls that a STRONG trend, I might hold on longer, anticipating even more profits. I use TOVI as my CONFIRMER. Paper trade a bunch of strategies, rktech, with your charts and see what I mean.
(You'll especially appreciate TOVI's brand new Signal Tracker coming within the next week . . . .)
Joanna Northlake,il asks:
Ken,Sir. I'm sorry, it took me so long to write this message. The reason why I didn't attempt the chat room earlier is my english language and my computer skills. Both are not perfect. It is easyer for me to speak and to read instead. Here is my little story. In Jan I purchesed May O.J. call options and it was like jumping in an icy water. I got my lesson. Now, I came back to all my materials and start all over again but with no emotions. I'm sorry I can't express every thing in writing but I would like you to know, that for women who came to this country 13 years ago from Poland with $200 in my pocket, you are my "Haeven men" /as an antient Chinese said. So, I would like to thank you and your staff from the bottom of my heart. Thanks for the greatest opportunity! Sincerely, Joanna Bielawska
at 7:41:37 PM
Joanna, I understood every word of your "little story." And it's no "little story." It's an epic! Thank YOU for the opportunity to teach what I've learned. And thank YOU for sharing your experiences with all of us here this evening. You don't realize how many of us YOU've helped tonight too.
Disco Inferno asks:
Hey Ken--THANK YOU for being willing to repeat yourself for those of us who have thicker skulls...After several unsuccessful real-money trades, I decided to pull back, regroup, and spend a few months paper trading again, and learning how to create an EXIT STRATEGY before I get in. Doing EXTREMELY well on paper and now I have the confidence to go at it again...thanks for your sound instruction!
at 7:43:05 PM
This seems to be the theme of tonight's Chat (isn't it amazing how we always seem to get on a particular track each month?), Disco Inferno. You're welcome (and thank YOU for listening)!
texasbob asks:
hi ken & company! greatings from austin. i've been a course member for a while now and i love it all. i called my broker last week to liquidate a september eurodollar put option. i asked for the bid/ask on it and i couldn't get a straight answer. all they would give me was the last trade. i put my order in based on the last trade and had no luck getting the order filled a couple of days in a row (this is a frusterating thing). is my discount brokerage being lazy, or is there no bid/ask? thank you for what you do!
at 7:44:38 PM
They're being lazy, texasbob! There's ALWAYS a bid/ask. Get after them!
Home Biz Joe asks:
Ken...As a previos subscriber to your paper chart service, I just wanted to say that this online chart service and tools is the BEST. You've really outdone yourself. I'm proud to be associated with you! Thanks for all your help and good spirit!
at 7:45:17 PM
And I'm proud that you're a Course Member, Joe! Thank YOU too!
schadzoo asks:
Beautiful New Jersey here.I opened a account and I talked to a broker today about funding my account. I said I wanted to start with 2000, he suggested 5000 for cheaper commishion costs, and wanted me to overnite a check. My question is why is he so agressive about getting my money so fast, and should I be concerned?
at 7:49:13 PM
Yes you should be concerned, schadzoo! It's YOUR money and he wants it so you'll begin trading and generating commissions for him! I'd keep shopping, schadzoo.
Chart Rider asks:
Hello Ken. Just a note to say "Thank You" and to let you know that I have been working your principles for over five years now and can call my own shots in life. Just got back from a commodities-financed trip to China where I climbed a mountain! Guts from the futures markets got me to the top. Happy trading.
at 7:51:25 PM
That's really macho, Chart Rider. I think there should be a reality TV show about you . . . . ("The Donald's got nothing on Chart Rider!" "Richard Branson is a girlyman compared to Chart Rider!")
robert asks:
Ken, robert on the gulfcoast. do you trade futures contracts still or do you just do options??
at 7:53:24 PM
Robert, what are you doing here on this Chat tonight?! You should have packed your bag and headed west by now! Ivan's on his way!
I still mostly trade futures contracts, Robert, but I trade LOTS of options too.
Thanks! (Now get going . . . .)
rikntracy asks:
How about that corn! It just keeps going! I wanted to tell you that the US Charts Online website is fantastic. I used to get the charts mailed to me but the interactive charts online were a brilliant idea. Thanks!
at 7:54:36 PM
Thanks rikntracy. I thought of them myself . . . .

I just thought of another Chart Rider promo:

dax asks:
Ken, here is how I began paper trading - I go with everything in your chart book, plus all of those in Trend Tracker that have just moved from Moderate to Strong that are not in your book. I am also NOT entering a trade unless I see a formation or see it break out of something in the charts AND TT says it has moved from Moderate to Strong. Should I wait for both, or should I just enter a market as soon as TT shows it has moved from Moderate to Strong (the day after)? Thanks!
at 7:59:49 PM
Try entering as soon as TT shows it has moved from Moderate to Strong, dax, and I think you'll like what you see.
(Hey everyone who asked about how to use TOVI in conjunction with your charts . . . .)
Thanks dax, good one!
Tom N asks:
Hi Ken, If a market has a top trend line and a bottom trend line (i.e. channel), and the market is bouncing between these two lines do you ever trade the ups and downs? I know you dont teach this but I see this happen all the time, was just wondering. Thanks!!!!
at 8:01:02 PM
Yes, Tom N, this is a popular form of trading. Go forth and paper trade it! Thanks.
One last reminder about those Chat Photos of YOURS: See my comment earlier this evening right after MeMe's question at 6:50pm.
Send us those photos!
gotrader asks:
gaotrader from colorado. Ken, I've been o.j. call options {real $} for the last month & a half. After being bombarded by fundamental news {hurricanes} it was starting to drive me crazy. I didn't want the storms to hit florida' but I knew i would make money if it did. I liquidated my Nov. 80 call options the end of last week for small profit {$1,000}. I sleep better, and can say give me the charts anyday. THanks for all you do !!!!!

Ran asks:
Hi Ken, Ran from IL, near ST. LOUIS. I made $780.00 on OJ, got out of it today. Do you think it's too late in the year to trade
options (not enought time)? Should I be looking at the beging of next year?
at 8:05:16 PM
Yes, Ran, check out all those 2005 OJ options. Thanks!
dax asks:
Ken, years ago in 1996, I first bought your TWMPMM course. I paper traded FAR TOO LITTLE, did see how simple it was to enter a market correctly, opened an account, entered 3 different markets correctly, watched all markets do exactly what they were supposed to do, and THEN realized that I had paper traded way too little on EXITING! I watched my small account dwindle to nothing... BUT I DID see excitingly that everything works! Now we are with a different system, WGB because as I understand it fits current times the best, and I see it working, and I have COMMITED to take however much time it takes on my paper trading - if that is 1 month or 10 years! It was an inexpensive lesson, and I am glad to be back in the game - thanks for that!
at 8:05:59 PM
Thanks dax. Great observations and advice.
stmike asks:
Mr Roberts: I see fundamentals such as the recent hurricanes affect the futures market. Does TOVI check the weather for short term or long term trends? Stmike
at 8:06:37 PM
No, stmike. TOVI is strictly TECHNICAL in nature!
TOVIJUNKIE asks:
Ho Ken and crew, Finally trading real money and so far so good. Spent three days with a g.t.c. order in May 05 oj waiting for "my" price and finally got a fill on 9/13. My broker talked to me about how the price was too far away and probably would not get filled. thanks to US Charts and TOVI I stuck to my plan and shocked the "big" time traders! Thanks for all you do! By the way, who do you pick as this seasons winner on the apprentice? TOVIJUNKIE
at 8:08:27 PM
Thanks TOVIJUNKIE!
Yes, loved that first episode of The Apprentice 2, but I haven't picked THE WINNER yet. Will let you know when I figure it out.
Tadd in Indiana asks:
Hello Mr. Roberts. I would like to know who sells options. Also, could you tell me where the "pit" is where the options are traded in an open outcry situation? I'm very curious about this.
at 8:11:06 PM
Thanks Tadd! Those who sell options are just like those of us who purchase them: individuals, institutions, and hedgers. (TOVI will have a Writing Options Module very soon now too.) Option trading pits are right next to their parent futures pit at all of the various Exchanges. (Hey! You're in Indiana! Go on over to the CBOT and CME and take a look in person. It's truly amazing . . . .)
dsnyfan asks:
Hi Ken! You still taking on visitors up in Grants Pass? I did well with my paper trading but not so hot in the first few months of real trading. But the good news is I am learning to have a "what if" plan. Thanks Again for all you do.
at 8:11:35 PM
Yes, dsnyfan, come on out! Thank YOU too!
xxlhog1 asks:
you've suggested brokers before and was wondering if you have a current one thats kr friendly
at 8:12:14 PM
See our Names & Numbers to Know in the Members Center on this site. Thanks!
Rick Fullard asks:
Ken,
Just a word of thanks for answering Drew's question in a straightforward way. I have some friends in the chat room tonight that have just recieved the course and are in their first chat. They are not yet aware of obvious answers. Thanks for being sensitive to those who are new.
Rick
at 8:12:56 PM
Thanks Rick!
Ninja asks:
Hi Ken & Crew,
No question, just a quick thanks for all the course materials and
being here for all us students. I have tried other "guru" courses
and found them to be lacking and no after sale support. KRC is rated
A+ in my book. I haven't made it "BIG" yet but I will. I hope to make
this my full time job so I can spend more time with family and charity
work. thanks again, from Fort Jones, Ca.

Come on over the mountain and see us, Ninja! Thanks!
sabrena asks:
Good evening Ken I think your wife's cookie recipes are wonderful. I was just wondering does she trade also? Sabrena from Farmington Hills
at 8:14:15 PM
Yes, sabrena! Krista LOVES Coffee calls! Thanks!
