Let's Talk Trading (tm) with Ken Roberts

Nearly a quarter-century ago (!) I began my commodity trading and teaching career using three price charting services: Dunn & Hargitt, Commodity Price Charts, and (the best of the three) Commodity Research Bureau (CRB). There were features I liked about each one, but none had every feature I wanted, and that would have helped me, in my trading and teaching. So 12 years ago I began publishing my own price charts that had every feature I wanted and needed in my trading, and called it U.S. Chart Company. (We just passed issue #600!)

Dunn & Hargitt stopped publishing commodity charts many years ago, and CRB recently purchased Commodity Price Charts. CRB is an institution in the futures and financial industries and has been publishing continuously since 1934. Not only is CRB known for its legendary CRB Index commodity futures contract (whose price charts you’ll find included in U.S. Charts’ weekly chartbook), its famous CRB Commodity Yearbook sits on every serious investor’s bookshelf. CRB also offers an incredible array of online resources and trading tools. CRB continues to lead the pack and set the standard in the financial/commodity industry.

And for nearly a month now, CRB has seamlessly taken over all aspects of U.S. Charts and the World’s Greatest Business™ and will continue producing them exactly as you and I have come to love them! I continue to consult with CRB and create new product for your benefit which will now be offered through CRB/U.S. Charts. So stay close to CRB/U.S. Charts!

For example, my latest and greatest DVD: “My Favorite Market Now!” seminar/workshop will be available to you exclusively through CRB/U.S. Charts!

This is a very special meeting I conducted and professionally video taped here at my Company Classroom in Grants Pass for just 12 people who each paid $1,495 to attend. I took them by the hand --- all the way from kindergarten to college! --- and led them through the most opportune market I’ve ever seen in commodities! (Hint: Imagine silver at 6-cents/ounce, gold at $3/ounce, copper at less than 2-cents/pound, wheat at 6-cents/bushel, coffee at less than 1-cent/pound, and sugar at less than 1/3-cent/pound! That’s the kind of opportunity we’re presented with now --- and margin is less than $100 for a full-size contract!) In fact, I present 8 different and practical ways to trade this ultra-extreme market as part of this special seminar/workshop on DVD.

I’m finishing the editing process now, then we send it out for high-quality duplication. CRB/U.S. Charts will make it to all active subscribers starting in July at an exclusive price just for you! (If you’re not currently an active subscriber, [CLICK HERE] and get on board! Don’t miss “My Favorite Market Now!”!!)

Although I helped conceive, develop, and launch The Option Value Indicator ™ (TOVI™), I am no longer an owner of Market Valuation Institute (the company that owns and operates TOVI). TOVI continues on uninterrupted at www.TOVIonline.com, and I wouldn’t trade options without consulting TOVI!

I’m also no longer an owner of Grand Central Trading Company, but it’s a brokerage I’m proud to have been involved in the formation of. It was founded with my personal commodity broker of over 12 years upon the very best principles and practices we believe constitute a great brokerage. GCT remains online at www.GrandCentralTrading.com, and I would include them when interviewing potential commodity brokers.

And so, as I expand my horizons and do more writing, speaking, and consulting without the weight and responsibilities of a corporate structure, tonight’s will be my last regularly scheduled Let’s Talk Trading™ Chat. CRB has ably taken over all operations, including the same solid-gold team of talented, capable people I hand-picked and trained to help me serve you all these many years! So from your point of view, not much has changed at all --- except that it’s all just gotten even better! We’re in great hands . . . ! (And don’t miss CRB’s next regular monthly Trading Chat featuring Trader Jim Tuesday, June 6th, 6:pm Pacific Time. Trader Jim’s been my Company Trader and ever-popular Trading Camp leader for over 12 years now. I taught him everything I know!)

“Now that I’m not running a large company, what am I going to do with all my spare time?”

Well, I’m going to think . . .

I’m going to write . . .

I’m going to speak . . .

I’m going to consult.

And a large part of “expanding my horizons” involves dedicating more of my time and energy to my Ultimate Technique for Success Course.

Ultimate Technique for Success

While it’s true that, as Thoreau said, “The mass of men lead lives of quiet desperation and go to the grave with the song still in them,” we all ultimately desire to simply love what we do and do what we love. So simple, but so elusive . . . . My UTS Course is the fastest, most direct route to that dream. It’s the shortest distance between you and what you love to do! It is, in fact, what every successful person did . . . !

Major benefits of enrolling in my powerful, 3-month UTS Course include 1) A monthly online RoundTable Meeting (the next one will take place Tuesday evening, June 13th, 6:pm Pacific Time), and 2) A private, Members-Only email address to communicate with me directly during your Course Membership! (Disclaimer: I love providing this personal, one-on-one service, and will continue to do so as long as my time allows.)

In closing, I want you to know that you are near and dear to me. It’s been my honor, privilege, and joy to serve you all these many years. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.

So goodbye for now, God bless, and . . .

. . . Onward & Upward!

Ripley asks:
From Ripley, PA Good evening Ken and team, hope all are well. In regards to tonite's announcment please don't say your selling off the company or heaven forbid retiring! for I shall be very very unhappy indeed. So I'm hoping for only good news because there's no KRC without Ken Roberts. OK that said later in the chat or next chat I'd like to update you on my papertrades but for now I have one question - I've reviewed 4starbooks but I can't decide on the very first Dr Hawkins book I should begin reading, could you please suggest the best choice to start with. As always sincere thanks and warm regards Ripley.

at 6:21:59 PM

Thank you Ripley, and many thanks for the kind words too!

Great choice, beginning with Dr. Hawkins! I'd recommend beginning with Power vs. Force (and begin listening to either of his CD audio sets as soon as you can --- Krista and I go to sleep every night listening and wake up the next morning feeling g-r-e-a-t!) . . . .

Ripley, believe it or not, I'm NOT retiring . . . !
14damoney asks:
Deanna in Salmon-- Hi Ken and company! Do u have a formula for not exiting your positions prematurely? My timing really seems to be off concerning this! "

at 6:24:40 PM
Welcome to the futures markets, 14damoney!

We ALL have had to come up with a plan that works best for us individually. This is why I harp on paper trading SEVERAL different approaches and see which one(s) works best for you.
Mike in NYC asks:
Ken: Thanks for all your great work, and for being so generous all these years. Thank you for introducing me to commodities, and because of that, the better person I have become. Trading commodities successfully taught me how to be my own ""expert"" in so many areas of my life. Good luck on your new pursuits. Please stay public - I intend to thank you in person someday. All the best!

at 6:28:01 PM
Thank you, Mike! I'll look forward to meeting you too. Wise words: Commodity trading is NOT just about the money, is it?! It's all about your INNER condition too! This is why I formed Four Star Books . . . .
Mickeyite asks:
Wow Ken! Mike in Salem here. Congratulations! We'll miss your updates and chats a lot! That being said...Ted Warren teaches going long on ""shakeouts"" from triangles (pennants) such as the one that is taking place in sugar. Your thoughts? Mickeyite

at 6:32:33 PM
Thank you, Mickeyite! We're in great hands with CRB and Trader Jim! I'll be on the Let's Talk Trading Chat right along with you on Tuesday, June 6th, 6:pm Pacific Time --- I can't wait!

Looks like a Ted Warren formation to me too --- good eye!
matt from wash,dc asks:
Ken - I have been with your company since 1994 and feel confident that we will continue to be guided by only the best ---regardless of you sitting at that computer or not. nice to meet you trader jim - let's talk commodities and make some money !!

at 6:33:31 PM

Onward & Upward, Matt --- thanks!
colin asks:
Wow Ken, It has been great to have someone like you in my sphere. You have walked the talk and have shown a way to a greater understanding of life. As the years have gone by I have only increased in my respect for you. As I explained to my family when I stopped trading for a while, your approach has forced me to grow first as a person. The trades, while important, are secondary. Bon Chance....Colin

at 6:34:26 PM
Thank you, Colin! You're very kind.
kelly4cigr asks:
I agree with MIke in NYC. I attended your camp last November - you're a hero my friend!

at 6:37:03 PM
Couldn't have done it without you too, kelly4cigr!
OregonJim asks:
Ken, Last week Gold did a downturn, but didn't retrace 50% Do you see this as a retracement, or just a profit taking by some of the ""Big Boys""?"

at 6:42:52 PM
OregonJim, This is TraderJim, Ken asked me to field your question since he thinks we might be cousins. . . Gold is currently in retracement mode, however, as a chartist we'll have to watch and wait to see what pans out. If not already paper trading this market I'd watch from the sidelines and see how it shapes up.
Alan asks:
Hi Ken, I paper traded a few years back, and then traded a couple markets, but had to liquidate to pay for school. Now I am starting to get back into the markets, I've paper traded and even made some money on Gold. Previously when I traded futures I felt I could only trade markets with margins in my ballpark, but now that I'm using options, I feel I can trade almost anything. Due to all these opportunities I feel a bit overwhelmed when trying to pick a market to get into. Do you have any suggestions on a selection process, when so many good oppertunities arise, but one has a limited account?

at 6:48:53 PM
Hello Alan! Yes, just like the 6-shooter of the Old West, options are the Great Equalizer! Yes, there are so many opportunities to trade now, it can be difficult to decide! (Wow, what a problem . . . !)

Whether you're paper trading or not, here's one approach to help you decide which market(s) to trade: Place open entry orders in several markets and let the markets themselves TELL YOU which to enter first! Then, if you run out of money to trade more, cancel those open orders. Try it, and be sure to report back and let everyone know!
14damoney asks:
Hi again, I was late joining chat this evening, so I entered my question before I read your announcemnt. Wow, what a shock. You will be missed for sure! What a fantastic job you did. Thank you

at 6:50:00 PM
Thank you, 1 4 da money. Sincerely, 2 4 da money!
uncle fudd asks:
Ken Thanks for all you have done, I'm going to miss you even though I have never met you personaly. There comes a time when everyone must hang up their guns. Fantastic job helping people. Thanks

at 6:50:40 PM
Many thanks, Uncle Fudd, but I'm not hangin' up these guns --- just watch for me to come out shootin'!!!
Ripley asks:
Dear Ken Well the worst has been confirmed, and I'm very sad and unhappy but I'm very happy for you as I'm sure this was not an easy decision to come to. I've just started with you this year (although I've been a fan for over 10 years - talk about starting late!). I would like to ask a few questions though if I may to ease my suffering. 1) What will happen to the Ken Roberts Company and website - will you operate UTS from there? 2) Will Steve Roseme still be involved in the running of GCT and TOVI? 3) Will 4starbooks close down as well? 4) Will any of your earlier training video series be available for sale and finally 5) do you think that you will release any recent training programs on dvd? Thank you again for everything you've done and much success and happiness to you, Krista and your family. Warm and sincere regards Ripley. By the way you won't be getting of rid of me quite that easily as I now intend to join UTS - of course I was going to do that anyway:)

at 6:58:07 PM
Thank you again, Ripley.

1) Yes, you can always find me, and what I'm up to, at: www.KenRoberts.com

2) Yes!

3) No, the bookstore's open!

4) Absolutely! Stay close to CRB!!

5)Yes! See my ""My Favorite Market Now!"" DVD/video preview . . . .

Welcome aboard UTS! I look forward to hearing from you, Ripley!
knoxjc asks:
Is the chat still going? I am a wgb student, and I made my first options perchase yesterday.

at 7:12:12 PM

Yes, knoxjc, we're b-a-c-k now . . . . Congratulations on that first trade!
Gary from Fairhope asks:
Ken, Good Luck to you, Krista and Chelsea. We look forward to seeing you all when you visit Fairhope. Thanks for all you have done and will continue to do.

at 7:13:44 PM
Hello Gary, and thanks! Yes, we'll be flyin' in to Fairhope Municipal Airport ("4R4" for you pilots out there) in June.
TIgger_T_Bounce asks:
Hello Ken, Congratualations on your retirement. I want to thank you for all the years of teaching that you have done. You have always been there, making the technicals easy to understand, and with laughter too, you have become a very enjoyable friend. Onward and upward.... Enjoy your journey JB Slear

at 7:14:19 PM
Thank you JB --- you're the best!
ozie58 asks:
Ken; you gave us all so much. For those of us who were open to it, you introduced us to how much authority and power we have over our lives. By the way; you mentioned trading from time to time. Thank you does not quite seem to cover it.

at 7:15:31 PM
You covered it great, ozie58 --- thank YOU!
Goldie asks:
Goldie from Poulsbo, WA Ken, thank you for everything you and your staff have done. Without this course, I would be dreamless!! Will there still be a Ken Roberts Company? Course counselors?

at 7:17:01 PM
Oh yes --- it'll be better than ever! We're in great hands with CRB (Course Counselors are still at the very same phone number too)! You can stay in touch with me at www.KenRoberts.com. Thanks for joining us this evening, Goldie!
juniegirl asks:
Thanks for getting me started in this business. I enjoyed meeting you at the January trading camp and will always wish the best for you, your family, and all the terrific people I met at the Ken Roberts Company.

at 7:18:38 PM
Hi Juniegirl! Thank you. (Did you see yourself on the DVD Preview?)
Sneak Preview My Favorite Market Now
pkstubbs asks:
I like the look of the UTS course but I was just about to order the 50% retracement course. Should I continue with the order or order the UTS course??

at 7:19:47 PM
BOTH, pkstubbs, BOTH!
EricInJapan asks:
Wow. The mentor I never met in person, thank you most sincerely.

at 7:20:28 PM
I'm proud to be a Friend You Never Met, EricInJapan! Thank you too . . . .
pkstubbs asks:
I didn't get in on the beginning of this evenings chat. Whats the big to doo?

mattituck mike asks:
ken, a broker called me the other day and asked what technical indicators i used to trade with and i said" a ruler and a pencil"...actually i use an offical stainless steel cork backed ruler and a red trading pen, and a fresh set of us charts, with a little help from tovi...and thats it...thats all you need mm

toddman asks:
Hey Ken I have been a course member for about 10 years now and i still enjoy it today as much as i did then. But now it seems i have to cleanout my closet, and move my old courses into the spare bedroom [twmpmm 1and2,money manuals newsletters etc..]So my wife has more room for clothes and shoes, she says that I don't need them anymore because Ken uses tovi now, along with other new strategies I agreed, but i still like to review the older stuff sometimes just like she likes to wear her old pointed green shoes. What are your thoughts ken on the old materials[not the green shoes]thanks Ken and good luck in all you do.

at 7:39:16 PM
You scared me, toddman --- I thought you said that YOU like to wear your wife's old pointed green shoes . . . ! (I wear Krista's old RED pointy shoes and find that they really do help me trade better . . . .) The "old" material is CLASSIC --- the truth never changes.
EricInJapan asks:
Another "thank you": I ordered and received the ACTT course a couple of weeks ago, and I must say that my eyes almost popped out of my head as I looked back over my charts with ACTT in mind because of all of the opportunity and possibility! I'd say that is quite an accumulation in gold, for one. Thanks again, and one day, I hope to add you to the Friends I HAVE Met portrait!

at 7:40:26 PM
Yes, Eric --- Ted knew his stuff, didn't he?!

Advanced Commodity Trading Techniques
ojaigal asks:
Hi Ken...and Many Blessings to you and your family as you begin this new adventure. I started with your courses 6-7 years ago, and although I am just returning to commodities, I have followed the chats from time to time, knowing that it was only a matter of time before I would trade again. I love this business & know that I will be successful! Thank you for your teachings, guidance & for all of the wonderful support. As others have stated here, commodities is only part of it, I have learned so much about myself in the process. ALL THE BEST!!!

at 7:41:05 PM
Onward & Upward, ojaigal! Thank you.
pkstubbs asks:
Thanks for all your guidance and help including all your ideas, charts, etc. It's been a pleasure working with you.

capt. ric asks:
Ken...I posted a question on your first chat a long long time ago...(when I was a newbie from a colder climate...LOL) I have BOTH Great Wealth and Riches (those that know, KNOW!!!!) Thanks for all you have done for my family and because of what you taught me I write this from a much warmer climate. Goodbye old friend and Congrats...May the wind always fill your sails and soul...CAPT. RIC

Aye, aye, Captain Ric! Glad you didn't miss the boat!
ForeMe asks:
ForeMe--Nebraska--Thanks Ken--Not that this will be real impressive to some--but since February my portfolio went from $3,000.00 to 15,000..thanks to you and all your support staff, that Goldwing is just around the corner. Thanks again

at 7:46:21 PM
Sounds good to me, ForeMe! Congratulations! (Now TEACH what you've learned and enroll in the UTS Course!)

The Clock is Ticking
Vern asks:
Hi Ken, should I watch the 50% retracement mostly on weekly charts only ? Also, how should I decide to place my formation when the present front month rolls over to another new front month ? Do I update the same formation as the previous Daily Chart (say , like copy July to August formation) ?

at 7:48:48 PM
Hello Vern . . . . Apply the 50% Retracement Rule to Monthly, Weekly, AND Active Futures Month DAILY charts too! Yes, transfer your 50% levels and formations to the next new Active Futures Month.
Deb & Andy asks:
Hello Ken, I guess we all knew this time would come but hoped it wouldn't. Good luck on all your new ventures. Will there still be a Ken's Chart Book (on the US Chartco web site)? Thanks Ken and Take Care

at 7:49:43 PM
Thanks Deb & Andy! Yes, everything you've come to know and use --- plus more coming soon!
Bonita Joe asks:
Ken my friend!!!! Great move! BUT....who do we hit with the bad jokes? All I can say is that you have truly changed my life and I am forever grateful! No one person has inspired me, or turned me to the inspirational thoughts and material, like you have. Life is what we make, day by day and now I look forward to Mondays at 4:30 AM to get up to speed. If you and Krista are ever near San Diego....give a call! Take care...BONITA jOE

at 7:51:40 PM
Hello my friend! Trader Jim can handle all the bad jokes you throw at him (and lots of people DO throw things at him)! In fact, Jim has bruises all over his body from people touching him with 10-foot poles . . . .
Paul asks:
Ken, Thank you for "teaching us to fish" rather than "giving us a fish" Your "teachings" have transformed so many lives and not just in a financial way. Thank You, Ken!!

at 7:52:39 PM
!
Gary from Fairhope asks:
As one that has profited from the "UTS" course, I would recommend it to everyone. I am glad to hear that you are going to focus more attention on it. While I was so busy dealing with all the "success", I let some of the "gold coins" slip by. I hope to get back on track. Thanks Ken again for everything. I just had hamburgers on the grill.

at 7:53:31 PM
Thanks Gary! Ooooooh, those burgers sound gooood! Wait, I think we can smell that b-b-q from here . . . .
sirlarry asks:

A Shining Star
pkstubbs asks:
I've been paper trading since Mar 28. I've noticed on some of the put contracts that I purchased that even though the underlying commodity is going down in price the option is also going down. What's up with that???

at 7:58:05 PM
That particular market likely didn't drop very fast (not a lot of volatility), pkstubbs. Also realize that options tend to lag futures a bit, so don't give up yet. (When there's high volatility and a market moves UP, for example, the puts sometimes also rise in value too!)
ready2win asks:
Hi Ken, WOW I was not expecting that announcement but as always you lead by example. You are showing us how to find and do what we have a passion for and then to make sure we "smell the roses" so to speak. As Traders I guess we are all going to have to stand on our own feet. If all that you have left CRB doesnt continue the way you would hope what tools would you tell us to make sure we keep or purchase to help us meet our dreams so one day we can follow your path. I am a UTS member and look forward to our continued relationship. I echo everyone tonight thanking you from the bottom of my heart for everything you and your family have done for us

at 8:00:24 PM
I have full faith and trust in CRB, ready2win, but ultimately, all you need is your set of price charts! See you at our next UTS RoundTable Meeting Tuesday, June 13th, 6:pm Pacific Time! Onward & Upward!
greg in arizona asks:
Ken, Before stumbling onto your courses a few years back, I had gone through many self-improvement courses, MLM and network marketing businesses, etc. Your courses have been better than all the rest put together! Thanks a million, and the best of luck to you and your family.

at 8:01:35 PM
We followed the same path, greg! Glad we're on the right track now!
jmst asks:

capt. ric asks:
Ken, You gave my husband (Capt. Ric) a cigar and candle that smells like money when you burn it (so he says).. He has never lit either one but, I just got them out of his office upstairs and told him to light both for you... Mrs. Captain Ric Yes the candle smells better than the cigar but then I like the smell of money

at 8:03:26 PM
That's neat, Mrs. Captain Ric! You two sound terrific! Thanks from Krista and me . . . .
Vern asks:
Hello Ken, just a thought. It'd be great if you can drop by Singapore sometime to give the same great trading camp courses and as well other courses featured over in Grant Pass in the future. I'd be the first to welcome you! my great mentor! What do you think ? Cheers!

at 8:04:19 PM
We were just speaking about Singapore this evening at dinner before this Chat. Sounds like it might be a possibility . . . !

Your Hummer with the Big Pencil will be a collector's car. Heard GM stopped making them. Thanks for being outrageous, and teaching us all to participate in Commodities - the last free bastian of capitalism.

It's been my pleasure, Mike, to be outrageous!
sparkles asks:

Sneak Preview My Favorite Market Now
pianodad asks:
Pianodad from Austin: Ken, your announcement took me by surprise. At first I felt sad, but then I remembered what a friend told me once when things looked bleak; she said oh, Tom, don't you know that change is always good? I will take her at her word, and wish you and your family the very best. I believe your best work may still be ahead of you!

at 8:20:13 PM
That's what I'm thinkin' too, pianodad! Thank you!

Mike in NYC asks:
"Oh fibonacci, fibonacci, I love you fibonacci!" My wife of twenty years, taps me on the shoulder, and says this, when I need a smile. Thanks for having so much fun with us!

at 8:27:08 PM
What a gift, fibonacci, err, Mike! Thank you for that! (And don't let the stochastics get you down!)
chrisfrom barrie asks:
Hello Ken, could you please take us back to your first trade? did you make money? did you lose money? was it one big win that gave you confidence or was it a loss that made you think "I can win at this game if I stay persistent"? Thanks Ken

at 8:39:15 PM
Well, chrisfrombarrie, I remember Abe Lincoln standing on the train platform, waving at the gathering crowds. Sugar was 2-cents a pound (those were the good old days) . . . . I was carving my chart tablets with my trusty red hammer and Pentel chisel (I also remember Krista's old red pointy lace-up boots . . . . Boy, did I look good in those beauties, if I do say so myself!). My first gold trade was the time I pulled out that gold spike from the new transcontinental railway in Colorado (Wow! That was a close one, but I made a bundle . . . .) Then the Indians captured me and took me to their leader (who I noticed was wearing a pair of old turquoise beaded pointy moccasins (my red boots looked MUCH better!). He made me drink the strongest fire water they had and told me he would set me free if I would teach him to trade ... commodities . . . . (And that's how TWMPMM was born!)
richk asks:
Dear Ken, the most important insight you once shared that has forever stayed with me is that for a person to be a good "trader", the first priority is to grow "spiritually". I absolutely believe this and took this pearl of truth to heart. I'm indeed sad to hear this news, didn't expect it at all, but wish to sincerely thank you for your wisdom, generosity, and for being a truly "soul-ful" person! I have benefited from you in more ways than expected. Many Blessings to you! rich, new haven, ct.

at 8:39:54 PM
Thank you, Rich!
ready2win asks:
Ken, I have kept myself from asking this question but I have to and I offer my apologies ahead of time. Do you see tremendous opportunity to acheive dreams as you have in commodities?

at 8:40:39 PM
Absolutely, ready2win: I'm living proof (and read some of the other comments here this evening too)!
mattituck mike asks:
ken whos gonna show us how to trade the new housing markets? thats what i thought your announcement was going to be..

at 8:41:54 PM
Yes, those new housing contracts will be interesting to watch (and trade)! And I know CRB and Trader Jim will be on it!
Barkn from Missouri asks:
Ken, I want to say it's been a pleasure doing business with you. I've been a course member since 1990 and have grown in so many ways it's impossible to list. You are a true humanitarian and philanthropist. What I've always admired about you is your moral compass. You don't just want people to become successful traders being financially independent, you encourage people to search their "Inner Self" and become "Good Moral People!" That is the difference between you and every other person with a course or method out there. Hence, 4 Star Books. Thank you, friend. May the sun always shine on your life and keep in touch with us. By the way... For me, $100,000 in paper trades in last 6 months. (Copper, Gold, Sugar and OJ has been good to me) And doing good with real money. Thanks Again!

at 8:43:28 PM
We can only see that which is already within. Thank you Barkn!
LearningIn Detroit asks:
Hi Ken. I have been a course member for 10+ years and thanks for all that you have done. I am grateful to you for teaching me commodity trading and also for introducing me to Dr. B's book on water. You helped me improve my physical health as well. I wish you a peaceful future. Thanks a million.
